MIKE SHULA - September 2, 1985
Alabama 20 | Georgia 16
Alabama met the Georgia Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA on September 2, 1985 for the season opener. The strong Bama defense kept Georgia in check for almost the entire game until the Bulldogs blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown with only one minute left in the game. As Bama trailed 16-13, Crimson Tide quarterback Mike Shula (#11) remained calm and with only 50 seconds at his disposal, led the Tide on an improbable comeback. The play culminated in an 18-yard touchdown strike over the middle to Albert Bell. With Van Tiffin’s extra point added, the Tide triumphed 20-16.
