Alabama, with a losing season record, beat Auburn, the Sugar Bowl-bound and nationally ranked team. That was the first time in 33 years that a team with a losing record had won the Iron Bowl. Bama held them ‘til the end, closing with a goal line stand. Poor coaching was the cause of Auburn’s loss — the Tigers went for a field goal, but missed it with only seconds left in game.
