In 2013, aTeam Ministries paired Artist Daniel A. Moore with pediatric cancer survivor Nick Bowens to create one special oil painting, titled Overcoming Adversity, that was auctioned off to the highest bidder at their annual Gala. There was also one original canvas replica of Overcoming Adversity, signed by both Daniel Moore and Nick, that was sold to its highest bidder. In addition to the two canvases, beautiful signed and numbered limited edition Giclée prints of Overcoming Adversity are still available.
aTeam Ministries is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to offering spiritual, financial, and emotional support, through a variety of programs, to children and their families within the pediatric cancer community. This support is given as a way to breathe life into the scriptural mandate found in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: "Blessed be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, with the comfort with which ourselves are comforted by God."
The following is the story of Nick and Daniel’s collaborative journey in creating Overcoming Adversity in the artist’s own words:
"A couple weeks earlier Nick had watched on TV as Alabama came from behind in the last minute to beat LSU in the hostile confines of Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, commonly known as 'Death Valley'. Amidst this tremendous adversity and overwhelming odds, AJ McCarron led the Tide offense in the dramatic 72-yard drive that resulted in a last-minute game-winning touchdown. This would prove to be the key in preserving Alabama's hopes to play form and successfully defend its national championship. From several key moments in the game, Nick chose AJ's celebration after he scored an earlier touchdown as the subject for our painting. Nick also came up with the title of Overcoming Adversity for the painting. We both agreed that this was the perfect title and visual representation for Nick's story and the adversity that he has overcome."
"Nick is certainly and inspiration to me as I trust he is to all who know him. It is our prayer that his story and this painting will provide hope, strength and support through aTeam Ministries for other kids who are striving to overcome adversity." — Daniel A.
